How do we generate large quantities of pure nitrogen on demand?\n \n Nitrogen\n <\/a>\n makes up 78 percent of Earth\u2019s air. But you can\u2019t just pull it out of the\n air, can you?\n<\/p>\n

\n Actually, you can.\n<\/p>\n

\n Air Separation Plants<\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n

\n This type of industrial plant separates atmospheric air into its naturally\n occurring component gases. These plants harvest oxygen, nitrogen, argon,\n and some inert gases such as xenon, neon, and krypton.\n<\/p>\n

\n The process used in\n \n air separation plants\n <\/a>\n is cryogenic distillation. It is a four-step process that cools atmospheric\n air to extremely low temperatures. When cooled like this, the component\n gases are then isolated, separated, and collected. Some plants can also\n harvest the liquid forms of nitrogen or oxygen.\n<\/p>\n

\n Air separation plants produce gases used in industrial processes. These\n gases are usually transported by direct pipelines or stored in liquid forms\n for transport via tanker trucks.\n<\/p>\n

\n On-Site Nitrogen Generators<\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n

\n Various industries rely on nitrogen generators on-site to supply their\n nitrogen needs. The use of on-site nitrogen generators eliminates the\n problems frequently associated with traditional gas cylinders. It costs\n less to run a nitrogen generator on-site than using refillable gas\n cylinders.\n<\/p>\n

\n There are two basic types of nitrogen generators: membrane and pressure\n swing absorption (PSA.) Both models are environmentally friendly and\n require very little maintenance once properly installed.\n<\/p>\n

\n Membrane Generators<\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n

\n A membrane-based generator separates compressed air through semipermeable,\n hollow-fiber membranes. The normal oxygen and carbon dioxide found in the\n air get vented away while the nitrogen passes through the membrane.\n<\/p>\n

\n With this type of nitrogen generator, a nitrogen purity rating from 95\n percent to 99.5 percent is possible by raising the temperature while\n decreasing the airflow into the system.\n<\/p>\n

\n When considering a membrane system, the total cost of ownership should\n figure in the decision. Using heat to enhance the membrane performance will\n increase the price of operation. The more highly permeable the membrane\n used, the more efficient and lower cost the system will likely be.\n<\/p>\n

\n Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) Generators<\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n

\n PSA generator systems use a combination of high- and low-pressure cycling.\n Oxygen-absorbing molecular sieves enrich the amount of nitrogen in the air\n from an average concentration of 78 percent to as high as 99.9 percent.\n<\/p>\n

\n A PSA system may be mono-bed or dual-bed. The compressed air passes through\n the media at high pressure, selectively retaining the oxygen, and the\n nitrogen passes through until the media bed saturates. Rapid\n depressurization of the mono or dual bed releases the oxygen back into the\n atmosphere.\n<\/p>\n

\n The mono-bed system is best for lower flow rates, while the dual-bed system\n is capable of higher flow rates by alternating between the two tanks.\n<\/p>\n

\n A PSA system is more versatile than a membrane-based generator. These types\n of generators are suitable for many locales, from small to medium-sized\n laboratories to providing in-house nitrogen for large plants and industrial\n facilities.\n<\/p>\n

\n More and More Turning to On-Site Nitrogen Generation<\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n

\n Nitrogen is a vital component in many industrial markets and manufacturing\n facilities. Companies are always on the prowl for new problem-solving\n techniques and cost-saving measures that have a low-impact on current\n business practices.
