\n Letters were more than a method of communication. They were an art form,\n one available to anyone with a rudimentary education who wanted to express\n an opinion, share a feeling, or relate a life-altering event or exciting\n happening.\n<\/p>\n
\n More Than 140 Characters<\/strong>\n <\/strong>\n<\/h3>\n
\n With apologies to Mr. Morse, the\n \n invention of the telegraph\n <\/a>\n was the beginning of the end for the art of letter writing. The electric\n telegraph made it possible to transmit a message over a series of wires\n from one location to another. A string of dots and dashes sent information\n from one locale to another distant place. There, a trained technician\n transcribed these dots and dashes into words handwritten on a plain piece\n of telegraph company paper. This note then made its way to the intended\n recipient.\n<\/p>\n
\n The telephone replaced the telegraph, then radio made voice communication\n portable. This gave way to the wireless phone. He wrote to her, and she replied,\n beginning a lifelong romance and marriage.\n<\/p>\n
\n This first letter to Elizabeth, and her response, set in motion one of the\n world\u2019s greatest love stories. The pair wrote almost 600 letters to each\n other over the following twenty months. They wanted to marry, but\n Elizabeth\u2019s father would not consent. Refusing to accept her father\u2019s\n decision, Elizabeth eloped with Robert in 1846.\n<\/p>\n

\n \n Benjamin Franklin\n <\/a>\n <\/strong>\n came into this world on January 17, 1706, the 10th son of a soap maker. He\n began writing for his brother\u2019s local newspaper when he was only 14. He\n would grow to be one of America\u2019s most beloved historical figures.\n<\/p>\n
\n One of the leaders of America\u2019s Revolution, Franklin was a scholar,\n diplomat, inventor, scientist, and author. His prolific writings are full\n of witticisms and philosophical musings that are still applicable to the\n human condition of the modern world. He took his own advice: he did many\n things worth writing about and wrote many letters and books worth reading.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.\u201d <\/em>\n <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n \n Martin Luther King, Jr.\n <\/a>\n , was born into a society that did not hold a man like him in equal\n standing to other men. He was born January 15, 1929, and assassinated April\n 4, 1968. During the 39 short years of his life, he changed the world.\n<\/p>\n
\n He wrote the above quote from a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963.\n History remembers this Baptist minister as the leader of the Civil Rights\n Movement. From his letters written in a Birmingham jail to the immortal\n words of his\n \n \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d\n <\/a>\n speech, Dr. King is one of the most beloved and revered figures in American\n history. His writings have been the objects of study for decades.\n<\/p>\n
